Rebuilding After a Hurricane

By NanaWall Systems, October 9, 2017

Recently, several areas of our country suffered the impact of severe hurricanes. If you or your loved ones have had the misfortune of being in a hurricane zone, please know that our hearts are with you.

Rebuilding after a disaster can be a harrowing task in and of itself, so here are 5 tips that we found in our research to help you prepare for the future:

  1. Nail it down. In Florida stapling roofs have been a banned practice since Hurricane Andrew, so be sure to nail down the roof for more staying power. Hurricane clips are recommended as well.
  2. Rebuild using concrete. If your home needs walls rebuilt or any other significant work, concrete is a great choice. Concrete is water-resistant, intensely durable, and quick to dry.
  3. Invest in impact-rated fenestration. Impact-rated window and door products, like our NanaWall Folding System SL73, are designed to withstand the force of hurricanes and are rigorously tested. Be sure to do your research, as not all hurricane products are created equally.

  1. Rethink your garage door. Think of your garage as a fortress of sorts; a lost fortress equals a lost castle, and it’s the same with houses. A lost garage door compromises the garage and allows the entire home to become pressurized by hurricane winds: a blown off roof is sure to follow. You can reinforce a standard garage door by adding a vertical bracing system, or you can buy a garage door that is rated to withstand 50+ pounds of pressure per square foot.
  2. Limit your overhang. Another way people tend to lose roofs is by having a roof with too long of an overhang. A more generous overhang allows more uplift pressure to be generated from the wind beneath it, thus making it more likely that the roof will fly away. Roof overhangs should be limited to 20 inches.

We wish you the best of luck with your rebuild and a speedy recovery. We hope that you and yours have all you need to keep safe.
